Solo & Ensemble Festival
Students can expect to make the most individual progress in their musical achievement by preparing for their performance during the festival.
All band students must participate as in the festival as it is a mandatory part of the band grade. Sectional ensembles will be formed (i.e., flute choir, brass choir, etc.) during band class and optional solo and small ensemble opportunities are available. 2022 WSMA Solo & Ensemble Festival

At the Festival –
All WSMA Festivals have five primary goals:
- The adjudicator must be provided with a legal copy of the music to be performed i.e. the student must bring the original piece to give to the judge. Failure to do so will result in verbal critique only (no rating).
- The student reports to the performance room (site) at the assigned time.
- The student introduces themself and their selection, then performs.
- The adjudicator will provide a written and verbal critique of the performance and award a rating based on defined criteria. (Rating 1 = highest, rating 5 = lowest)
All WSMA Festivals have five primary goals:
- Improve students’ music performance;
- Increase students’ understanding of music literature and music concepts;
- Motivate students to continue their study of music;
- Establish standards of excellence in music performance;
- Provide opportunities for students to understand the relationship of music experiences to other life experiences.
