We strive to recognize student achievement and effort whenever possible to encourage growth. In addition to the end-of-year awards listed below, we give student- and staff- elected awards at the end of band camp, throughout marching season and during the school year where applicable. Below are our biggest awards, awarded at the final band concert in May.
National Color Guard Award - Given annually to each school’s top color guard member who has not only performed well but also given above and beyond to the program and displays maturity and excellent intangible qualities. This award was endowed with a scholarship by former Hamilton band and color guard member Paula Myatt (class of ’11).
Patrick Gilmore Award - Presented annually to a band student who shows tremendous dedication and enthusiasm for the band program throughout their time, this young man is no exception. Whether he was spending hours of his own time over the years setting up and tearing down or volunteering to play in ensembles he didn’t need to be a part of but understood the need, this young man has personified the legacy of American Band leader Patrick Gilmore. The award includes a scholarship of $500.
The John Philip Sousa Award - The most prestigious award available and given to the most outstanding band member at each school every year. The recipient must show outstanding dedication and service not only for their success but for the success of others. This year’s recipient has shown all of that and more. Always the first to arrive (often ahead of the adult staff) and the last to leave, constantly sharing her passion for the band with others and encouraging them to keep going and reaching higher, she has been an inspiration to many over the years. The Band Boosters have also attached the Bruce Buck Memorial Scholarship of $500, in honor of a former band parent who was tremendously involved and supportive, and who passed away in 2005.
Louis Armstrong Award - Given to each school’s top jazz band member annually. The HHS Band Boosters have generously attached a scholarship of $500 for the winner.
